There Is No One-Way-Fits-All to Breastfeeding: Finding the Feeding Plan That Works for You Pt 2

Breastfeeding Support Should Not Depend on a Particular Outcome

Imagine two parents visiting a lactation consultant.

One wants to increase milk production and exclusively breastfeed. The other wants to continue breastfeeding twice a day while using formula for the remaining feeds.

Both parents deserve skilled care.

The first may benefit from an assessment of milk transfer, feeding frequency, infant growth, and milk removal. The second may need help establishing a comfortable routine, maintaining the amount of breast milk they wish to provide, and finding feeding methods that fit their family’s schedule.

Neither parent should have to defend their goal before receiving support.

Non-judgmental care does not mean avoiding difficult conversations or ignoring health concerns. It means presenting relevant information honestly, identifying risks, explaining recommendations, and respecting the parent’s right to make decisions within the appropriate standard of care.

It also means recognizing that a parent’s goals can evolve.

A parent who once wanted to breastfeed for a year may later decide that three months is right for them. Someone who begins with formula may want to explore relactation or increasing breast milk production. A parent who planned to exclusively breastfeed may discover that combination feeding offers the balance they need.

These changes do not erase the care, effort, or love that went into earlier decisions.

The best feeding plan is not necessarily the one that looks most impressive on paper. It is one that supports the baby’s nutritional needs while remaining realistic and appropriate for the family.

Whether you are preparing to breastfeed, navigating low milk production, considering supplementation, combination feeding, pumping, or thinking about weaning, you do not need to have all the answers before reaching out.
